Palm Sludge Oil

Recovered oil from mill effluent and clarification residue, and a low-cost feedstock for soap, biodiesel and industrial applications.

  • Substantially cheaper than prime crude palm oil
  • High free fatty acid content suits saponification and esterification
  • Recovered from mill effluent, which reduces waste and pollution load

About Palm Sludge Oil

Palm sludge oil, sometimes traded as palm oil mill effluent oil or recovered oil, is the oil separated from the clarification and effluent streams of a palm oil mill. Rather than being lost to waste, it is decanted, settled and recovered as a usable feedstock. It carries a higher free fatty acid content than prime oil and a darker colour, which is exactly why it is priced well below CPO.

For non-food applications that value fatty acid content over appearance, this is an efficient raw material. Soap manufacturers saponify it directly; biodiesel producers appreciate the high FFA as an esterification feedstock; oleochemical plants split it for fatty acids and glycerine. Nothing about the darker colour or stronger odour matters once the material is processed.

Recovering sludge oil also has a genuine environmental dimension. Palm oil mill effluent is a significant pollution load if discharged untreated, and pulling the residual oil out of it reduces both that load and the waste of a usable resource. It is one of the more straightforward circular-economy wins available in palm processing.

iFlowdeck aggregates sludge oil from mills across our sourcing network, settles and filters it to a consistent trading specification, and supplies it in bulk or drums. Because the input stream varies by mill, we test each consolidated lot and quote against its actual analysis rather than a nominal figure, so buyers get the parameters they will actually receive.

Questions

Palm Sludge Oil: frequently asked

Is palm sludge oil suitable for food use?
No. Sludge oil is a technical-grade feedstock for soap, biodiesel and oleochemical processing. It is not supplied or certified for human consumption.
Why does the free fatty acid content vary so much?
Sludge oil is a recovered stream, so its composition depends on the mill and the residence time before recovery. We test every consolidated lot and quote against that lot's real analysis rather than a nominal range, so there are no surprises on arrival.
Can it be used directly for biodiesel?
It needs an acid-catalysed esterification step first to convert the free fatty acids, followed by conventional transesterification. Producers already set up for high-FFA feedstocks handle it routinely and gain a meaningful cost advantage over refined oils.
