About Palm Kernel Shells

Palm kernel shells are the hard fragments left after the kernel is cracked out of the palm nut. They are dense, naturally low in moisture and high in fixed carbon, which gives them a calorific value of roughly 4,200 to 4,500 kcal/kg. That is comfortably the best-performing solid biomass to come out of palm processing, and close enough to low-grade coal to substitute for it directly.

That substitution is now a large international trade. Power utilities and industrial steam users in Japan, South Korea, Europe and increasingly the Middle East co-fire PKS with coal or run it as a standalone biomass fuel, driven by renewable energy mandates and carbon pricing. Because PKS is a genuine residue rather than a purpose-grown crop, it carries a strong sustainability case and generally qualifies under biomass certification schemes.

The technical advantages over other biomass are practical ones. Sulphur content is below 0.1%, so SOx emissions are negligible. Moisture is naturally low, so it needs no drying before combustion. It is uniform, free-flowing and dense, so it handles, stores and conveys like a mineral fuel rather than like loose agricultural waste, and it does not need pelletising to be shippable.

How does PKS compare with coal as a boiler fuel?
Calorific value sits at roughly 4,200–4,500 kcal/kg against 5,500–6,500 for steam coal, so you burn modestly more by mass. In exchange you get sub-0.1% sulphur, far lower ash, and a renewable fuel that counts toward biomass and carbon obligations. Most co-firing installations blend it without boiler modification.
What size and screening do you supply?
Standard is 5–15 mm, screened and sieved to under 3% fibre and dust. If your feed system needs a tighter size band or lower fines, tell us the tolerance and we will screen to it.
Can you provide sustainability documentation?
Yes. PKS is a residue of palm processing rather than a purpose-grown fuel crop, which is the basis of its sustainability case. We can arrange the certification and chain-of-custody documentation your renewable energy compliance regime requires. Tell us which scheme applies.
How should PKS be stored?
Under cover and on a hard standing. It is far less prone to spontaneous heating than wood chip or pellets thanks to its low moisture and density, but keeping it dry protects the calorific value you paid for.
